Why your hourly rate is probably too low
Most contractors set their rate by looking at what others charge, or by taking the wage they'd earn working for someone else. Both leave out two things: overhead (truck, insurance, tools, licenses, software) and non-billable time (driving, estimating, buying materials, paperwork).
A 40-hour week usually has far fewer hours you can actually bill. If you only bill 30 hours a week, every dollar of overhead and pay has to come out of those 30.
How this calculator works
Break-even rate = (yearly pay + yearly overhead) ÷ billable hours per year. Then we add your profit percentage on top as a margin, so the profit is a real share of what you bill.
Tracking it for real
The rate you need changes as your costs change. JPFLD tracks crew hours, materials, and job costs so you can see profit per job and adjust before a bad month, not after.
