Pitch factor for 6/12: 1.118. This covers field shingles only - add starter, ridge cap, underlayment, drip edge, and labor separately.

How to calculate roofing squares

A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface. Because a pitched roof is longer than its footprint, multiply the footprint (including overhangs) by the pitch factor, then divide by 100.

Pitch factor = √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²). A 6/12 roof has a factor of about 1.118, so a 2,000 sq ft footprint is about 2,236 sq ft of roof - 22.4 squares before waste.

How much waste to add

Simple gable roofs often use around 10%. Hip roofs, valleys, dormers, and cut-up roofs need more. Use your own experience for the roof in front of you.

Bundles per square

Most three-tab and architectural shingles are packaged at three bundles per square, but check the wrapper - some heavier products use four or more.
